HIATUS WEEK 4: The Tale of a Disappointing Land Shark
Posted August 12, 2022 at 1:01 am

For the final week of the hiatus, I’d like to tell you about a very special and hilarious webcomic called The Tale of A Disappointing Land Shark. It is drawn and written by my fellow Canadian, Junoro. I was introduced to her work back when BB was still on the webcomic hosting site, ComicFury, but how time flies…the comic now spans an incredible 300 pages!

Land Shark recounts the tale of a very buff fish man with immaculate abs named Caddy. He is caught like a guppy in a trap set by treasure hunter Phoebe Walker, who seeks to exploit her fantastical catch for money by selling him to a zoo. But all is not as it seems…something sinister is hiding in Caderyn’s lost memories, and when everyone's family drama bubbles to the surface, Caddy and Phoebe may need to put their differences aside to help each other out.

Caddy and a swath of other merfolk featured in the story are Cramoridians – a species of blue, aquatic fish people whose bodies grow coral-like structures called zhell. Though it comes in many forms, each with their own uses, Cramoridians also eat their own zhell for sustenance, and will often be seen snapping pieces off their shoulders to idly chew on.

Caddy is pursued by plenty of Cramoridians, one is named Nana, and she is VERY MEAN and VERY ANGRY. Honestly who cares about Caddy’s abs? Just read it for her. She is wonderful, and the fight scenes with her even more so.

There is a lot I love about this one but the writing, pacing, character interactions, and jokes are incredible. Junoro's witty, biting sense of humor is one of the comic's biggest strengths. My fellow Canadians, there are so many oddly specific jokes tucked in there just for us.

As webcomic artists, we juggle a lot of different hats, it's like rolling an entire movie crew into one job. But this comic is truly strong all around. Junoro is the mastermind behind Land Shark’s intelligent writing and hard-angled art style, but the beautiful colors are thanks to another excellent webcomic talent, Spelledeg of Now Hiring. She joined the creative team as the colorist in 2021.

If you’re into more upbeat, funny, fantastical stories like Inuyasha or Full Metal Alchemist with the modern family drama of Raining Knives, you’ve gotta check out The Tale of a Disappointing Land Shark.
